In 1991, a group of concerned businessmen and women joined together in an effort to raise money and establish a Main Street Program for Union City. It is affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center and follows the ideas of that program.

Main Street's role in the revitalization process has been to act as the liaison between the public and private sectors and to capitalize on the unique character of the courthouse and the surrounding business district with the goal of transforming downtown into the cultural, social, professional and retail center of Union City.
